Vastu for North Facing House: Entrance Position, Room Placement & Design Rules

By Vinod ChristopherMarch 202614 min read🧭 Vastu Guide

North-facing houses are among the most sought-after in Vastu Shastra — the north is ruled by Kubera (lord of wealth) and governed by Mercury, associated with prosperity, career, and financial growth. But a north-facing house only delivers these benefits if the key Vastu rules — especially the entrance position — are followed correctly.

Why North-Facing Plots Are Considered Auspicious

In Vastu Shastra, each direction carries specific elemental and planetary associations:

For these reasons, north-facing plots are ranked alongside east-facing plots as the most auspicious in Vastu tradition. Many Vastu practitioners even prefer north-facing for commercial and business-oriented households.

Entrance Position: The Most Critical Decision

In Vastu Shastra, the north wall is divided into 9 equal segments called padas (positions), numbered 1–9 from east to west. Not all padas are equally auspicious.

Practical measurement: Divide the total north wall length into 9 equal parts. For a 30-ft north wall, each pada is 3.3 ft wide. Count 3 padas from the east end — the entrance should fall in the 3rd or 4th pada segment, ideally with the door centred on pada 3 or 4.

Kitchen Vastu for North Facing House — Detailed Rules

The kitchen is associated with the fire element (Agni) and must be placed in the southeast (Agni direction) in a north-facing house. Specific rules:

When SE kitchen isn't possible: On a north-facing plot, if the SE corner is constrained by setbacks or structural requirements, the northwest is the only acceptable alternative position for the kitchen. Never place the kitchen in the northeast (NE is the puja/water zone), never in the southwest (SW is the master bedroom zone).

Master Bedroom Vastu Rules

7 Most Common Vastu Mistakes in North-Facing Homes

  1. Entrance in pada 1 (far NE): Many architects instinctively place the entrance at the northeast corner — this is actually the worst pada for entry. Pada 3–4 is correct.
  2. Kitchen in the northeast: Small plots tempt designers to place the kitchen in the NE (near the entrance). This is one of the most damaging Vastu errors.
  3. Master bedroom in the northeast: NE is the Ishanya (spiritual) zone — it should remain light and open, not occupied by a heavy-use room.
  4. Staircase in the northeast or centre: Both positions disrupt energy flow. Staircase belongs in south, southwest, or west.
  5. Heavy construction in northeast: Any heavy structural element (water tank, storage room, thick walls) in the NE disturbs the energy balance.
  6. Cutting the northeast corner: Never cut or truncate the northeast corner of the plot or building. This is considered highly inauspicious in all Vastu traditions.
  7. Overhead water tank in centre or NE: The overhead tank must go on the SW — the heaviest structural zone. Placing it in the NE or centre is a significant Vastu defect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — north-facing houses are considered highly auspicious in Vastu Shastra. The north direction is ruled by Kubera (lord of wealth) and Mercury, both associated with prosperity and career growth. North-facing plots are often ranked alongside east-facing as the most desirable. The key is to place the entrance in the correct north pada (position 3 or 4).

For a north-facing house, padas 3 and 4 are best (counting from the northeast corner going west). Pada 3 ('Jayanta') brings wealth and prosperity; pada 4 ('Mahendra') is associated with power and authority. Avoid pada 1 (far NE), pada 7, 8, and 9 (northwest area). Divide the north wall into 9 equal segments and position the entrance in the 3rd or 4th segment from the east.

The kitchen should be in the southeast corner (Agni direction) in a north-facing house. The stove should be on the east wall so the cook faces east. If southeast isn't possible, northwest is the only acceptable alternative. Never place the kitchen in the northeast — this is the most common and most damaging Vastu error in north-facing homes.

The master bedroom should always be in the southwest corner, regardless of plot facing. The bed head should face south (first preference) or east. Never sleep with head pointing north. Keep heavy furniture against the south and west walls. The southwest is the heaviest structural and energetic zone of the house.

Yes — the northeast corner is the ideal position for a puja room in any house, including north-facing. In a north-facing home, the NE corner is especially suitable as it aligns with both the entrance direction and the spiritual zone. The idol should face west or south, so the devotee faces east or north while praying.
